My Review: Kings of the Coast tells the story of a Native American princess in the 1660s who was kidnapped in New York. Storm Lily is the daughter of Wyandanch, the chief of the Montaukett tribe. On her wedding day, Storm Lily is kidnapped by the enemy tribe, the Narragansetts. She is then sold to Dutch traders. Her only hope for survival and freedom rests on her true love, Seahawk. Seahawk then embarks on a quest to rescue her.
The story is told from the perspectives of both Seahawk and Storm Lily. Storm Lily is a likable princess. She is intelligent and thoughtful. Because of her resourcefulness, she is able to command respect from those around her. I also like how Storm Lily was strong, determined, and decisive throughout the novel. Even when she was kidnapped, she was defiant and headstrong. She was also courageous and comforted the other girls of her tribe who were kidnapped with her. I also love her relationship with Seahawk. They both bonded over the loss of their loved ones. I also found Seahawk to be a compelling protagonist. He truly loved Storm Lily. He often went through great lengths to save her, even risking death himself. I was so invested in the characters that I wanted to see if they would end up together.
Overall, this novel is about love, friendship, survival, and hope. I like all of the characters and thought that they were realistic. I liked the writing style and thought that Mr. Cataletto did an excellent job in making 1660s New York come alive. I also liked how Mr. Cataletto portrayed the various tribes in New York and their complex relationship with both the Dutch and the English settlers. The only thing I did not like about the book was that the beginning was slow-moving. It is not until over a hundred pages that Storm Lily is kidnapped. Once Storm Lily is kidnapped, then the story quickly gains momentum, and I was soon enthralled with the novel! Kings of the Coast was an enjoyable and thrilling novel that I did not want to end! I recommend this book for fans of Favorite Daughter, Yakimali’s Gift, and Tidewater!
