My Review: Lucy Lawrence has just learned that her husband, Charles Lawrence, has just been murdered. When she verifies his body, she meets a handsome investigator named Princess Stone. Lucy soon learns that Charles had been involved in the theft of the stolen jewels. Can Lucy find the stolen jewels and find her husband’s murderer? As Lucy investigates the death of her husband, Lucy realizes that her life may be in danger.
Lucy is a sassy heroine. When we first meet her, she has a broken marriage with her husband. Charles was not a loving and tender husband, and Lucy has to endure being in a loveless marriage. When Charles dies, Lucy has to find a way to forgive him for the wrongs that he has done to her. I like that Lucy tries to work out her unresolved feelings for Charles while also making amends for the wrongs that Charles has done to others. I also like how Lucy has to come to terms with her family who has not been kind to her. I admired how Lucy wanted to investigate the case herself rather than leaving the case to Mr. Stone. I also like the relationship with her maid, Mary, who is her sidekick. Therefore, Lucy is a compelling character.
Overall, this novel is about grief, acceptance, and justice. I liked all of the characters and thought they were realistic. I also liked the setting of Victorian London and thought it was atmospheric! I did think that it was slow moving. It took three-fourths of the novel for me to finally get into it. I also didn’t care about the mystery because it was predictable. Therefore, the novel was drawn out. Nevertheless, I am still interested in reading the sequel, Footprints in the Sand! The Lucy Lawrence Mysteries still seems to be a very promising series! I recommend this for fans of Victoria Thompson, Hannah Dolby, and Anastasia Hastings!
